Previously, I had Posted that my wife and had had a great time, over the Thanksgiving Holiday, visiting my Brother and his Family, in South Jersey. Our Daughter, and her Husband, joined us, as well. But, I did miss my South Florida Newspapers.
The local Atlantic City Press focuses its reporting on the local news and, perhaps, that what their market demands. For a wider focus, most newsstands there also carry the Philadelphia Inquirer (the closest Big City Paper). Also, I had access to the NY Times and Washington Post on the Internet. But, even those miss covering South America and the Caribbean. Sometimes, even Washington seems to forget that it is there. That’s where the South Florida Media is different. It’s overseas focus is primarily to the South.

It is easy to understand why Miami, at least to some, might be considered the “Capital of South America”. In fact, many Corporations have their Headquarters for South America and the Caribbean in South Florida.
There are residents here with ties to literally every country in the Hemisphere, who know those particular cultures and speak the local version of the language (Spanish, Portuguese, Creole and, of course, English). At the same time, communications might be better in Miami, as well as Airline Travel, Safety, etc.
Venezuela lost approximately 30 percent of its Oil Workers when it Nationalized its Energy Industry. I recall one former client in Caracas, a Telecommunications Consultant, who I often had trouble reaching on his home phone-once the Government Nationalized the Industry. Each time, as discussed in the linked column, the result is often that the US benefits by receiving skilled and educated Immigrants.
Generally, our Nation focuses on the Debt Problem in the Eurozone and what is going on with the New Leadership in China. But, every once in awhile, think about what’s happening to our South. You might be surprised.
