Augusta National seems to have been dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 20th Century. Maybe, next, they might tread into the 21st Century. You might recall that Augusta is a Private Golf Club; so, it doesn’t have to abide by any outside laws or rules. Some twenty years ago, it broke the color line and admitted blacks.
Little by little, however, there has been a hew and cry from the Outside World, suggesting that Augusta loosen-up it’s membership rules. But, during the past Masters’ Tournament, it might have been brought to a head.
The Masters’ traditionally keeps TV Commercials to a minimum. Among it’s five Prime (and only) Sponsors this past year, was IBM. Traditionally, Augusta has offered Membership to the CEOs of the Prime Sponsors (blue chip companies all). That tradition seems to have been sidetracked, however, when IBM appointed Virginia “Ginni” Rometty as it’s CEO, as of last January 1. Last year, she was not offered a membership; however, it might have gotten the squeaky wheels turning.
Today, Augusta broke with its chauvinistic tradition and offered Memberships to Former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, and South Carolina Financier, Darla Moore. Is it only a matter of time before a Membership will be offered to Virginia “Ginni” Rometty, as well? CAN YOU IMAGINE THE IMPACT IF MS. ROMETTY TURNED IT DOWN?
