In a previous Post, I noted the Romney Family’s (George, Mitt and Mitt’s Five Sons) lack of Military Service.  Perhaps money can’t buy you love; but it sure can help with multiple deferments.  But, Mitt, wasn’t it a little late in 2007, at age 60, that you regretted not having served?  Oh, that’s right, you were getting ready to run for President in ’08!

There are two basic ways to staff an Army (all four services actually)–Conscription (a Draft) or Volunteers.  During World War II, Korea and Vietnam, we had the Military Draft; however, Non-Drafted Volunteers were certainly welcome, as well.  And, during WW II, some of our men even went to Canada or Britain to enlist, because America delayed entering the War, due to our Isolationism.

Now, some may think that I am in favor of War for this Post.  Certainly Not!  But, many in the Congress and Administration, over the years, have taken us to unnecessary wars.  And, it comes from both sides of the Aisle:  Lyndon B. Johnson had the erroneous Gulf of Tonkin Resolution to escalate the War in Vietnam, and George W. Bush used the fabricated WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) to take the Country into Iraq.  Both wars were bogus!

Some Wars are necessary, such as World War II.  If the US did not join with England and the Allies, the Nazi’s–who already controlled all of Mainland Europe–would have just continued on from Europe.  In the Pacific, Imperialist Japan was also invading its smaller neighbors.  The World would certainly have been a much worse place–if the Allies had not won!

So, if we can have an All Volunteer Army, why would Re-enacting the Military Draft be a better approach?  And, I DEFINITELY favor a Draft Without any Deferments whatsoever.  Just look at George W. Bush, who escaped from the Air National Guard, and Mitt Romney, who escaped to France on a Mormon mission.  The National Guard, in those days, was truly a Get-Out-of Jail Free Card–NOT LIKE TODAY!

The point is that, if a Nation is willing to declare war, it should ask everyone to be prepared to serve yourself–or to send your own children and grandchildren.  And that goes for the politicians, as well!  If a Nation goes to War, that commitment must truly be shared by all.  In essence, either put up, or shut up!

Over the three and-a-half years since I first wrote this post, it has been, by far, the most-read one. You might be interested in a more recent post, which states that the Draft is still the best way to go.
